Concept 4: Reinforcement
Workshop Stations
The fourth and final stage of these lessons is a time for reinforcement of concepts. I designed this to be done in a rotational workshop-style model, to allow students four different ways to look at reading basic sight words. If students are well on track, they can be done in one full set of rotations (i.e., one visit to each station) or this can be a week or several week block of workshop rotations. Descriptions of each workshop are below:

If students are well on track, they can be done in one full set of rotations (i.e., one visit to each station) or this can be a week or several week block of workshop rotations. Descriptions of each workshop are below:
Station 1
This station will involve having students use sight word cards on a SMART Board (or interactive whiteboard) to play the game Memory. Memory is played by having a group of cards (fewer cards for younger grades) placed with the words face down. Students must flip over cards, two per turn, and try to find the matching sight words. When they find a match, they must break and blend the phonemes and say the word correctly to keep the pair. Students can play in pairs or small groups of three. Materials needed: Sight Word Cards (SMART Exchange or pre-made) Station 3
This station will serve as practice for the final assessment ("Board Game Boogie"). The teacher should be at this station and be the first person to play to serve as a model. For instruction, visit the assessment page and view the Instructional Guide provided. Materials Needed: Board game, playing pieces, regular dice, Sight Word Cards |
Station 2
This station will involve having students creating words. Students will begin by creating a basic T-chart on a piece of paper, with one column labeled "Real Words" and the other "Fake Words". Each student (or pair of students) within the group with take turns rolling four foam dice - two of the dice will have vowels and the other two will have consonants (each type of die should be a different color). Using only the letters rolled, the students will try to make a word. If they think they can make a word, they will write it down under "Real Words", and if they cannot, they write the letters under "Fake Words". This might work well with an Instructional Aid or parent volunteer. **This activity can also be done on iPads or any other kind of tablet. Materials needed: Foam dice in two colors, pre-marked with letters, paper, pencils Station 4
This station will involve using iPads with a pre-loaded (free to download) application called SightWordNinja. Students would tap into SightWordNinja and play the game for the duration of the station. Below is a web tutorial I created showing how to customize Sight Word Ninja for the classroom (which you could do for specific differentiated groups): **Alternatively, if you do not have access to iPads there are several great online resources with games that students could be playing.
